Some homes offer a place to create. At 1643 12th Street #2 in Santa Monica, creativity is part of the architecture itself. Developed by the legendary late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry in collaboration with Los Angeles artist Charles Arnoldi, this distinctive live/work residence brings together architectural pedigree and a connection to the city’s artistic community.

Represented by The Agency’s Brandon Assanti, Residence 2 occupies a southwest-facing corner of an intimate six-unit building. Its approximately 2,565 square feet of interior space is currently arranged to be both a private residence and an art gallery.

Seventeen-foot ceilings, expansive walls, and industrial-scale windows give the interiors their gallery-like feel. Skylights draw daylight deep into each room, while concrete floors and a restrained material palette allow art and furnishings to take center stage.

The entry level pairs a dramatic double-height great room with an office or bedroom, a full bathroom, and a mezzanine. Above, the living and dining areas connect to a custom kitchen with concrete countertops and stainless-steel appliances.

The uppermost floor is devoted to the primary suite, where city and ocean views accompany a walk-in closet and a marble-clad bathroom.

The residence’s creative backstory extends to its former owner, Robin French. A prominent talent agent whose clients included Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, French later served as Paramount Pictures’ production chief. His connection adds a layer of Hollywood history to a property already distinguished by its architectural origins.
