Steps from the bustling Marunouchi district yet immersed in the serenity of the Imperial Palace gardens, Palace Hotel Tokyo is more than a place to stay—it’s a destination in its own right. Fusing timeless Japanese tradition with contemporary sophistication, the property has garnered global acclaim, including the coveted recognition of three Michelin Keys.

In this exclusive conversation, Masaru Watanabe, senior managing director and general manager, shares how the hotel embodies omotenashi—the spirit of Japanese hospitality—and curates experiences that connect guests not just to the city, but to the soul of Japan.

Palace Hotel Tokyo has become a destination in itself. What makes the experience of staying here stand apart from other luxury properties in the city?

Palace Hotel Tokyo is situated at 1-1-1 Marunouchi, in the very heart of the upscale Marunouchi district—a hub for business, shopping, and gourmet dining—while simultaneously offering the tranquility and rich, natural beauty of the Imperial Palace gardens. Uniquely, the hotel allows guests to experience the contrast between our ever-changing metropolis and the rich, intricate history that’s woven into the Imperial Palace—past and present.

The hotel’s heritage and setting are remarkable. How do its history, architecture, and proximity to the important landmarks shape the atmosphere guests enjoy today?

For over half a century, standing just in front of the Imperial Palace gardens, our hotel has been respectful to Japanese traditions and dignity. Following our three-year rebuild [completed in 2012], however, we have also come to symbolize both modern sophistication and Japanese tradition and dignity. As the singular hotel situated amidst the Imperial Palace gardens, it is one of the most beloved and culturally significant places in Japan.

We endeavor to make guests experience the true heart of Japan. “Experience the Heart of Japan” is, in fact, our brand concept. With all guest rooms featuring views of the Imperial Palace gardens and an art collection that takes inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds the property, guests can always feel the serene atmosphere of Marunouchi while at Palace Hotel Tokyo. We aspire to be timeless—just like the Imperial Palace.
