Following the pandemic, Mexico City has emerged as a vibrant hub for digital nomads. Named one of the “World’s Greatest Places” by Time Magazine, the city is a dynamic destination for tech-savvy professionals seeking a balanced lifestyle and thriving business environment. People are moving to Mexico City rapidly, bringing its metro area population to over 22.5 million, making it the second most populous city in Latin America after São Paulo, Brazil. To understand the allure of this multi-faceted city and why it continues to attract remote workers, we turn to Managing Partner of The Agency Mexico City, Ricardo Umansky.
Can you describe the digital nomads who are buying property in Mexico City right now?
Most digital nomads discovered Mexico City during the pandemic, as technology allowed those who wanted to work remotely. Most digital nomads are tech-savvy, young adults, self-employed or work in an industry that allows for remote work—mostly tech companies. I believe what first attracted them to Mexico City was a combination of the lower cost of living compared to most any U.S. city., its proximity to the U.S., and that we had a few more liberties during the pandemic.
Where are these digital nomads coming from?
Its been amazing to see the influx of people come from all over the world, mostly the U.S. and Europe.
What Mexico City neighborhoods are attracting them most right now?
Polanco, Condesa, La Roma, La Juarez, San Miguel Chapultepec all offer an amazing array of entertainment, food and lifestyle—the best of what Mexico represents.
What is attracting them to these areas?
Mexico City offers an amazing array of culture and entertainment. These neighborhoods present amazing culinary and cultural experiences, and nightlife is a big part of their appeal as well. Plus, they are very well located—it’s easy to get anywhere from Mexico City. Its also affordable for a foreigner to live here and the city boasts beautiful architecture and a unique urban landscape.
What do you think it is about Mexico City that appeals to these digital nomads?
It’s a city that offers you an amazing quality of life for a decent cost. It’s also within driving distance of many places, beaches, cities, small towns—it’s right in the country’s center, making it convenient for all kinds of travel.
What are some home amenities or features that you see digital nomad buyers seeking out in homes right now?
The areas mentioned have both new developments with amazing architecture as well as intervention in buildings that can be up to 100 years old—so there is something for everyone. Most people want balconies to enjoy the nice weather, security is always appreciated, and for the buyers who want amenities, most new buildings have rooftops and gyms.
What are your predictions for the presence of digital nomads in Mexico City? What can we expect to see this year and into the future?
It will be interesting to see! The pandemic is gone, so we’re not sure what will happen to this type of lifestyle. But the city truly is one of a kind and has been discovered as a must-see. So I think more folks will keep coming!
